Who, me?

So, I'm [personal profile] eman. I am the mutant spawn of a German-American Nuclear Engineer father, and a Blue-blooded Bostonian mother.

And I guess you might say I'm a geek of the hard science variety. I aspired to attend MIT from the tender age of eight, and though life (in the form of tuition) got in the way, and I ultimately earned a law degree, I've come full circle now, and am a program officer at the U.S. National Academies of Science.

I love Discover, Popular Science, Scientific American and still mourn the loss of Omni. I got sent home from school for insubordination in first grade when I stood up in class and told the teacher she was wrong and that heavier objects did not fall faster than light ones; it was all based on mass. I learned atomic theory at about the same time after I asked my father what the molecule of a molecule was; he used Tinker Toys to illustrate the concept. My 12th grade science project was on the effect of microwave radiation on the development of meal worms into beetles. The best Christmas present I ever got was a microscope . . . only because my parents never did buy me the chemistry set I wanted.

The photo on my profile page of me in Albert Einstein's lap was taken this year when I was awarded an Academy (of Science) Award for as a staff member who'd made outstanding contributions in the field. Within the Academies, I do materials science and engineering, with a few side trips into systems engineering and infrastructure-related matters. Lately, I've been doing a lot of work in rust (a much more significant and controversial field than one might think), but I've also done work in aviation security for the Department of Homeland Security, biomedical engineering, and will be conducting a review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative in 2010.

On the non-professional geek side, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous, and am discovering that there's more good science fiction out there than bad. I adore Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek (mostly next gen), X-Files, and whatever comes out of Joss Whedon's pen. I have a love/hate relationship with Superman and Bat-Man. In books, I tend more toward fantasy, specifically fairy tale retellings, although I am highly fond of the Kushiel series and Lois McMaster Bujold's work.

LOL, your post just reminded me of the other thing that made me think of you on my drive to MO - I passed two huge flatbed trailers with rusty pipes driving on the highway!!!

Kushiel's series is one of my favorite series! I am always so happy to hear other people have read it and love it as well!
