I thought I should add to the list of intro posts :)
I've been a geek for as long as I can remember, running around in a homemade Batman cape as a child, spending endless summer days lazing on the carpet in my room tapping out sci-fi stories on an old typewriter, playing Oregon Trail for hours, and so on. I am a sci-fi geek, a book geek, a music geek, and an all around dork.
I adore Star Trek, especially TOS, the classic Doctor Who, Star Wars, and all sci-fi movies from the 80s (Explorers, Starman, The Last Starfighter, Tron, WarGames, etc). Out of date cheesy special effects made me downright giddy. I have a huge book collection that covers a wide spectrum of interests from theology to rock star biographies and everything in between, including an ample collection of Star Trek and Doctor Who books.
I very much enjoy geeky decoration. In this room alone I have a Shakespeare action figure, a teddy bear dressed up as the fourth Doctor, a matchbox Enterprise, and an R2-D2 Mr. Potato head.
In high school I was in the physics club and did science and writing UIL. Now I just content myself with Discovery Channel DVDs and various documentaries. Besides mainstream science, I also have a strong interest in theories of the paranormal, especially Victorian ideas of such. That doesn't mean I really believe in those theories, but I do find them...well, as Spock would say, "fascinating."
Oh, and last year I went to Dragon*con and am still getting over just how awesome it was. I managed to have a very long conversation with Peter S. Beagle, mainly about writing A Fine and Private Place, which will always be a wonderful memory of mine.

Date: 2009-05-07 08:31 pm (UTC)Just found out Silent Running is actually a 70s movie - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/ - It's about the crew of a spaceship that had Earth's last nature reserves on it. When they're told to destroy the reserves and go home one of them goes a bit insane and kills the others and takes the ship on his own. It's a really cool movie.

Guh, I remember the Starman TV show. 80s movies were so camp it was lovely.

Date: 2009-05-17 05:24 am (UTC)I grew up on Star Trek, but I've just recently discovered Doctor Who, so I'm trying to go through decades of classic Who now, and I absolutely love it!
I also go to Dragon*Con every year. This year will be our fourth time, and we make sure to talk to Peter S. Beagle every time we go. He's such an interesting guy! (And Connor will talk your ear off if you give him half a chance.) I also met Edward James Olmos last year, and he actually snatched my camera away from me and told my husband to take a picture of us together without me even having to ask. It was the highlight of the trip for me! I can't wait for September!

Leonard Nimoy is going to be at D*C this year! There are no words to describe how excited that makes me.
