Apologies to the non-computer geek types, but I'm interested to know what we're all using here. Because, you know, I like computer talk.

I play with two computers at home. My desktop computer runs Ubuntu (9.04, Jaunty) and Windoze, and I have a second hard drive on which I've installed Gentoo just for fun.

My laptop is a teeny-tiny EeePC 701, and it's running Ubuntu 9.04 as well.

I am secretly considering crossing over to the dark side... if I can save up the dollars, I might buy myself a MacBook for Christmas. *shhh*

So what are you using?

I finally have a MacBook Pro after years of using a PC laptop, and I love it. I'm still playing around with it a bit - seeing what everything does. Still figuring some things out, too.

My desktop which serves as my main computer runs Ubuntu 8.10 as does my laptop.

My dad's computer is dual booted Ubuntu 8.10 and XP. I'll probably upgrade him to Jaunty soon. (I don't feel like upgrading my desktop because it's on its way out and I'm hoping to do a completely new build in the next six months or so.)

There's also an old computer that's running Windows '98, but that's just for business archives and it rarely even gets turned on anymore.

My husband is a systems analyst, so every desktop I've ever owned was a mish-mash of parts and pirated software. At the moment, we have five desktops running on three different platforms, three laptops - all Windows, one dinky Samsung Q1 tablet PC (which I love more than is healthy), and two Eee PCs with Linux.

There's also several pocket PCs knocking about.

That's approximately three internet-capable devices per person. It's entirely possible we're the geekiest family in the whole town.

Yep. Unless my husband has been mucking about with them, which is entirely possible. They belong to my kids, so I've never really used them.

Main system is a Mac, but I dual-boot XP, and my little 701 4G will someday have Xubuntu on it.

Gosh, I feel kind of lame in the company of all this coolness. I have an XP desktop and laptop, Vista laptop (not as horrible as I expected) and my good, loyal Win95 box that I need to make sure I have everything off of before I send it to the great recycler in the sky. However, I recently started playing with (and love!) Sugar. It's so basic and intuitive. Or rather, it would be if MS hadn't trained me to go digging for things in three layers of menus. I'm having to unlearn all that complexity.

I want to try the portable version of Fedora, but I'm limiting myself to one new OS at a time. Once I have jiggered with every program in Sugar and blogged it all, then I can tinker with something else. At least that's the plan.

I mostly use an HP Mini-Note with Debian testing installed. I also have a HP desktop used mostly for downloads and MythTV which is running Debian stable.

I have a co-located box running some version of Red Hat that I'm upgrading to Debian 5.0 in my spare time. It hosts my email and various 'net services. I used to be super hard core about running Unix at home as my main machine, but after doing that professionally for so many years I got tired of doing it at home as well. I have a desktop that's running XP that I use casually for gaming, photo management/manipulation, web surfing, iPhone management, etc.

I also have an iPhone that I use heavily at the office since they don't allow me to use my personal proxy (hosted on my colo box) and their own proxy is pretty darn restrictive. I can't WAIT for the iPhone to have a physical keyboard device!

Toshiba Qosmio laptop, running Windows XP Media Edition (no, *not* winMEish at all). Not enough graphics for anything after civ 4, but good sound and a nice wide screen. Cons: that nice, wide screen weighs a tonne. This poor laptop came with me to Spain to live, and back again, and there again, and back again, and has been dropped, and the cat loves to sit on it. And still it keeps going. It's just over three years old. There are gouge marks on the outside.

I have also an AMD phone which I adore, running some crappy winvariant for mobiles.

I have a Macbook, so Mac OS X. I /just/ finished upgrading from Tiger to Leopard not even an hour ago.

For my main desktop I dual boot Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP Professional x64.

My older desktop, which I only occasionally touch - mostly just stream all my old files from it, is running Windows XP Home Edition.

I have Kubuntu on my desktop at home, which I have barely used in the past six months since I started work, and I think it may still be on Hardy. At work I have a laptop with XP, which is surprisingly okay now I have putty, mIRC and FeedDemon on it. The time before I got Firefox on it was torture, though.

My home and work computers both run Windows XP right now (at home, it's because I'm a gamer and have been having issues with both WINE and my graphics cards on Ubuntu, and at work, I'm a programmer in a Microsoft house, so...yeah...).

My husband just upgraded his computer from Vista to the latest Windows 7 RC and has fallen in love with it for the most part (a ton of performance increases and streamlining), save a few menu inconsistencies (and total lack of menus in some cases).

I also just upgrade our POS laptop to Ubuntu 9.04 (from 8.10, so not much of a jump), though I'm tempted to put OpenSUSE on it because I ran the live CD of 11 a while back and loved it. The laptop's an older Dell Inspiron, though, which has been notorious for hating Linux.

I have a 13" aluminum MacBook (2.4GHz/250GB HD/2GB RAM) as my main computer but this fall, I intend to get a netbook with ubuntu. I'm debating whether or not to triple boot my MacBook with Ubuntu/10.5/Win XP (I hate Vista and I think I might be allergic to 7).

ETA: my other machines:

G4 tower w/10.2 & 9
G3 iMac w/10.3 & 9
(both running as file servers, primarily)
Dell Latitude w/XP Pro
Ancient Inspiron with XP home
Patchwork desktop I built about 5 years ago running XP home

Just got rid of a 2.16GHz MacBook (white shell) and 2 older G3 iBooks; I don't need them now that I have my aluminum heartthrob over here. ^_^

Yes. And it's pretty and it's better than Vista, but I still don't like it very much.

To me, it's better than Vista, but that doesn't make it a great option. It takes superfluous maneuvering in menus to actually get things done. Performance is better than Vista, but still a hog compared to other OSs I prefer -- I ran it for a bit on an 8 core xeon and while it did okay (as I said, better than Vista), it was still far less responsive than either Ubuntu or OS X (Leopard) were on that same machine. Menus are questionably organized and widely variable in usability. I don't know -- it just bothers me. Which isn't to say that I have a problem with anyone else using it. By all means, use what you like and I'll do the same -- but for me, that's not 7.

Thanks for the input! I agree that "to each his own," and was curious as to what you thought about it. I also agree that the menus/navigation is a bit sloppy.

It seems to me that it's a lot like IE8 in that it's something to consider upgrading to if you're using a previous version, but it's not likely to pull you off one of the alternatives.

I've got my Macbook Pro (First Gen-2006) dual booting OS X 10.5 with Vista - which it runs better than newer PCs which were designed for Vista!

My other machine is a Mac Pro with dual 24" monitors - seeing as I do a lot of graphics stuff, it's more a need than a luxury for me. I used to have a Dell 1420 running Ubuntu, but that's gone.

The hubby's main system is a Vista 64 bit mishmash machine, and he has a Dell 1505 running Ubuntu as well.

Oh, as well I have an iPhone (godsend for keeping me organized).

My main computer at the moment's an HP G70 - 17'' laptop running Vista (which I loathe) and also has my first Blu-ray player in it. For travelling, I have an Eee 901 running Xandros, which is bearable once I've unlocked the desktop to get past the noddy interface, but the battery life is utterly insufficient.

I may have to upgrade the netbook to something with better battery life in the very near future.

Sadly waved farewell to my XP desktop six months ago when I finally admitted that we don't have room for a second computer desk.

I used to have Ubuntu 8.04 on my home computer, but it would lock up and cause all the fans in my computer to run FULL SPEED when I would browse the internet so I took it off. Home computer now has XP Pro and Windows 7 beta, though I'm considering getting rid of Windows 7 and trying Ubuntu again since it has been a while. I tend to work in Windows most often since that is what all my development work is in ATM.

I would love to have a Mac Mini just to play with the different development tools. I keep telling myself I need to learn how to use the X Windows libraries to brush up on my C++.

I'm using an Acer computer, Dual-Core Processor, Windows Vista. From my experience, NEVER BUY AN ACER COMPUTER. I've had it for just a year or so now, and it has already picked up the habit of lagging badly (even the keying of words takes some time to be reflected on the screen) after prolonged use--after you've turned it on for two hours, the lagging starts. And I don't feel much heat coming from the case of the CPU.

My laptop is an HP model, pretty old, I guess (got it on the cheap from school), and from the specs, is expectedly less powerful than my desktop. However, I take it to be more reliable, because it is just a few notches slower than the desktop despite having the hard disk crammed to having a remaining 12GB of space and 512MB RAM. The desktop runs on 3GB of RAM and has over 150GB free HDD space. My conclusion is that Acer, with its crap quality, spells "BIG WASTE OF MONEY" when paired with Vista.

...and there you go, with additional ranting on the quality of my PC. x.x
