I tend to like his short stories better than his novels. He was mostly an idea writer, and often his ideas don't really work at novel length. (I think.)
That said, my favorite Asimov novel is
The Gods Themselves
For short stories, I recommend starting with
Isaac Asimov: The Complete Stories, Vol. 1
. If you like that, then go for
Volume 2
, which seems to be out of print.
